Description: Science
CD-Rom Encyclopedia Brief: To research, design, develop, refine, test and finally submit a Graphic-User-Interface (GUI) for this Science Encylopedic work on CD-Rom. Aimed at a young target audience, the design had to be fun whilst reflecting the authoritative nature of the content. Additional Info: At the end of 1994, Andromeda Interactive (a CD-Rom publishing company) and the American publishing Group Steck-Vaughn, agreed to collaborate on the 'Interactive Science Encyclopedia'. This CD-Rom made used of over 3000 text articles taken from the original printed book volumes of the Encylopedia. Through the 'Teaching Company Scheme' (TCS), between Andromeda and the University of Portsmouth, I was appointed as senior graphic designer, to join a small in-house design and development team that included a software designer, technical programmer and project manager. We were required to conceptualise, design and oversee the final production of this project, whilst constantly liasing with client in the States. As well as my graphic responsibilities in the development of the GUI, it was also necessary for me to design and create interactive and animated content in both 2D and 3D. This working assignment was also used as a model for an MA Research project illustrating the complexities of the multimedia design process and tracing the evolution of the Graphic-User-Interface. My MA research project was completed and successfully submitted to the University of Portsmouth in September 1996. The CD-Rom went on general release the following Christmas.
